A deadly landslide triggered by heavy rain struck a major Hindu pilgrimage route in Jammu, killing at least 30 people and disrupting communication across the region.

Torrential rains also caused flooding, prompting officials to warn residents to remain indoors at night.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast more rain for Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh in the coming days.

Communication lines in the affected areas were 'almost nonexistent,' according to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with authorities working to restore telecom services.

Schools and colleges in Jammu were ordered to close after the city recorded 368 mm (14.5 inches) of rainfall on Tuesday.
