Iraq's National Security Council has authorised the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), a mostly Iranian-backed coalition of Shi'ite armed groups, to exercise the right of self-defence and respond to any attacks targeting their positions, state media reported on Tuesday.

The green light from the National Security Council, chaired by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, followed a deadly attack on PMF headquarters that killed at least 15 fighters, including a commander.

U.S. expected to send thousands of additional soldiers to Middle East

The Pentagon is set to send thousands of troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, two officials told Reuters on Tuesday. Their arrival would add to the huge military build-up in the region, even as U.S. President Trump seeks talks with Iran. 

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, did not specify where in the Middle East the troops would be deployed or when they would arrive in the region.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Moroccan contractor killed in Iranian attack on Bahrain, United Arab Emirates says

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has confirmed that an individual killed in an Iranian attack on Bahrain was a Moroccan national working as a civillian contractor for the UAE's armed forces. Five other UAE military personnel were also injured in the attack, as well as a number of troops from Bahrain, the UAE said. 

The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised Iran in a statement on social media, branding the incident an "unprovoked terrorist attack" and a "flagrant violation of international law."

Speaking in Ankara, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reiterated that Türkiye was putting all its efforts into creating peace in the U.S-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler, sees a “historic opportunity” to remake the Middle East, the NYT said, citing people briefed by American officials on the conversations.

They said the Prince conveyed to Trump that he must press towards the destruction of Iran’s "hard-line" government.

Israel calls on UNICEF to condemn Iran's 'illegal use of cluster munitions'

Israel's Deputy Director General for the UN, Nina Ben-Ami, has urged the UN's children's aid agency to condemn what it describes as "indiscriminate ballistic missile attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran" against civilians, including the "illegal use of cluster munitions." 

According to Israel's Foreign Ministry, 18 children have been wounded by Iranian missiles since the start of the conflict with Iran. 

The 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions prohibits the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions. Neither Iran nor Israel has signed the treaty.

China's Foreign Minister urges talks in call with Iranian counterpart

Wang Yi called on parties in the Middle East conflict to start peace talks as soon as possible in a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Christian town north of Beirut hit by air strikes, Lebanese state media says

The town of Sahel Alma, north of the Lebanese capital Beirut was attacked on Tuesday, according to Lebanese state media.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the Christian town, that has previously not been targeted in the expanding fighting between Israel and armed group Hezbollah. 

Witnesses in the area told Reuters they heard several blasts and saw white smoke rising from the settlement.

As the world's fourth-largest importer of natural gas, India is especially vulnerable to fuel availability and relies heavily on the Middle East for shipments, sourcing about 40% of its supply from Qatar.

Iranian attacks have partially disrupted Qatar's export capacity, tightening gas availability for manufacturers in India.

President of Iraq's Kurdistan region blames Iran for missile attack that killed six people

Nechirvan Barzani, President of Iraq's Kurdistan region, has blamed Iran for a rocket attack on a base north of Erbil in Iraqi Kuristan that that killed six people and wounded 30 others early on Tuesday.

"We strongly condemn the Iranian missile attack that targeted the positions of our Peshmerga forces on the Suran border today, resulting in the martyrdom and wounding of several of our brave Peshmerga," Barzani said in a post on X.

Iran will demand significant concessions from U.S. in event of negotiations, sources in Tehran say

Iran would demand guarantees against future military action, compensation for losses incurred during the conflict and formal control of the Strait of Hormuz if serious negotiations between the Iran and U.S. were to take place, Reuters reports, citing three senior sources in Tehran. 

The concessions are likely to be red lines for U.S. President Donald Trump.

Iran's negotiating posture has changed since the beginning of the conflict, with the hardline Revolutionary Guards exerting more influence over decision making, according to the report. 

The sources added that Iran would reuse to negotiate any limitations to its ballistic missile programme, an issue that had already been a red line for Tehran during talks that were taking place when the U.S. and Israel launched their attack at the end of February.

Lebanon says it expelled Iran's Ambassador for interfering in domestic affairs

Beirut's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has provided additional details about its decision to expel Iranian Ambassador, Mohammad Reza Sheibani. 

In a statement posted on X, the Ministry accused Sheibani of meddling in internal affairs by criticising decisions taken by the Lebanese government and by holding meetings with "unofficial Lebanese parties." 

The Ministry said that Sheibani had violated the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations through his actions.

The decision "does not constitute a severance of diplomatic relations with Iran at all," the Ministry said, adding that it "always strives to maintain the best relations of friendship with the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Hezbollah says it will fight any Israeli move to occupy south Lebanon

Hezbollah will fight any efforts by Israel to occupy south Lebanon, Hassan Fadlallah, a lawmaker from the Lebanese armed group, told Reuters on Tuesday.

Fadallah said any occupation would pose an "existential threat" to Lebanon as a state. 

Israel's Defence Minister said earlier on Tuesday that he had instructed the military to establish a "security zone" south of the Litani River, which runs about 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of the Israeli border.

A state of national energy emergency has been declared in the Philippines, in response to the Iran conflict. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said fighting in the Middle East posed an "imminent danger" to the energy supply in the country of approximately 115 million in southeast Asia. 

Marcos Jr added that a committee had been formed to ensure the supply and distribution of fuel, food, medicines, agricultural products and other essential goods.

Lebanon expels Iranian Ambassador

Iranian Ambassador, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, has been declared persona non grata and ordered to leave Lebanon by Sunday (29 March), Beirut's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a post on X on Tuesday.

Iran's Chargé d'Affaires in Lebanon, Tawfiq Samadi Khoshkhu, was informed of the decision, the Ministry added. 

According to the post on X, the Ministry also summoned the Lebanese Ambassador to Iran for discussions, citing Tehran's "violation of diplomatic norms and established protocols."

Iran seeks debate at UN rights body over fatal school strike, letter shows

Iran's Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, has requested a debate at the UN Human Rights Council about a deadly air strike on a primary school on the first day of U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

"A strike on a functioning school during class hours represents a grave assault on children, on education, and on the future of the entire community," Bahreini said in a letter to the Council President dated 23 March.

The attack on the Shajareh ​Tayyebeh School in Minab, southern Iran on 28 February consisted of two missile strikes ​in quick succession that killed 168 children, mostly ⁠girls, Iranian officials said.

Reuters ​reported on 5 March that Washington's military investigators believe it ​is likely that U.S. forces were responsible, but they have not yet reached a final conclusion or completed their investigation. The Pentagon ​has since elevated the probe.
