On 1 May, Azerbaijan summoned the European Union’s ambassador, Marijana Kujundžić, to the country’s foreign ministry in protest over a resolution adopted by the European Parliament a day earlier.

According to a statement from the ministry, Azerbaijan strongly condemned what it described as unfounded and biased provisions targeting the country in the resolution, and formally delivered a note of protest.

Officials said the text distorted realities, breached principles of objectivity and ran counter to obligations to respect state sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning it could undermine both regional normalisation efforts and Azerbaijan–EU relations.

Baku also rejected references in the resolution to the return of Armenian residents to the Garabagh region, calling the claims groundless and an interference in internal affairs. Azerbaijani officials said Armenian residents had left the area voluntarily, despite a reintegration plan presented in 2023 under the country’s constitution.

The government further dismissed calls for the release of people of Armenian origin described in the resolution as prisoners of war, arguing such demands were legally unacceptable.

It said those currently jailed had been convicted of serious crimes, including terrorism, sabotage and war crimes, noting what it described as Azerbaijan’s previous humanitarian steps in releasing detainees.

Claims of the destruction of cultural and religious heritage were also rejected, with officials saying European institutions had ignored what they described as widespread damage to Azerbaijani heritage during the period of occupation.
