U.S. President Donald Trump has said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei “should be very worried”, as efforts to establish a diplomatic path between Washington and Tehran appear to be breaking down.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Trump was asked whether Khamenei should be concerned about the current situation. “He should be very worried,” Trump replied.

The comments come amid reports that attempts to ease tensions through diplomacy are faltering, raising the prospect of renewed military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

“They’re negotiating with us,” Trump said, without providing further details on the nature or status of the talks.

Trump was also questioned about Iranian protesters who say they feel betrayed after he previously voiced support for demonstrations against Iran’s leadership. Those protests were followed by a violent crackdown in which thousands were reportedly killed. Trump has since claimed he helped stop the planned executions of another 800 protesters.

“We do have their back,” Trump said. “That country is a mess right now because of us. We went in, and we wiped out their nuclear programme,” he added, referring to U.S. strikes on two Iranian nuclear sites last June during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel.

Trump has repeatedly asserted that Iran’s nuclear programme was destroyed in those strikes. Pressed on what nuclear talks would address if that were the case, he said Iran has since attempted to rebuild its programme at other locations.

Trump said such efforts would prompt further U.S. action.

He has not acknowledged that some nuclear sites were not targeted in the June strikes or that the location of already enriched uranium stockpiles remains unknown — factors that cast doubt on claims that Iran’s nuclear programme was completely eliminated.
