Kyrgyzstan is facing fuel supply challenges after shipments of petroleum products from Russia and Belarus fell sharply in July, pushing prices higher and forcing the country to look for alternative suppliers.
According to traders, fuel deliveries from Russia and Belarus dropped to 25,100 tonnes in July from 100,600 tonnes in June. Russian diesel shipments saw the biggest decline, falling to 4,500 tonnes from 74,500 tonnes over the same period.
The drop in supplies has affected the Kyrgyz fuel market, with traders reporting higher prices and uncertainty over future deliveries. Officials are now exploring alternative import routes, although establishing new supply chains would require additional time and costs.
Kyrgyzstan remains highly dependent on imported petroleum products, with domestic production covering only a small share of demand.
The country, a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), imports more than 1 million tonnes of fuel from Russia annually. Kyrgyzstan consumes around 2 million tonnes of petroleum products each year.
In July, the country also purchased around 10,000 tonnes of diesel from Belarusian producers as it sought to offset reduced Russian supplies.
Kyrgyz authorities have been working to diversify fuel sources, but traders say replacing Russian supplies will not be easy due to the time needed to establish new transport routes and secure stable deliveries.
The decline in supplies comes amid wider disruptions in regional fuel markets, with Russia itself increasing reliance on Belarusian fuel deliveries after refinery disruptions affected domestic production.
For Kyrgyzstan, the challenge remains ensuring stable supplies while reducing vulnerability to external market changes.
