A suspect was killed on Saturday evening in Washington DC, after opening fire on Secret Service agents near the White House.

Gunfire was heard around 18:00 local time (23:00 GMT), forcing journalists working nearby to take cover.

In a statement, the U.S. Secret Service said the suspect pulled a weapon from a bag near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and opened fire on agents, who returned fire and killed him.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a memorandum of understanding on a peace deal has been "largely negotiated" with Iran and will open the Strait of Hormuz, with details to be unveiled soon.

"Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly," Trump wrote on Trump Social.  

Trump posted the announcement after separate calls with the leaders of Muslim majority nations and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

But Fars reported early on Sunday that the agreement would allow Iran to manage the Strait of Hormuz and that Trump's assertion on the strait was "inconsistent with reality."
