Hamas claims it has lost contact with the group holding Edan Alexander, a U.S.-Israeli soldier, after an Israeli airstrike reportedly killed one of his guards.

Hamas' armed wing says it no longer knows the status of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander after one of his guards was reportedly killed in a recent Israeli airstrike.

Alexander, 21, a New Jersey native serving in the Israeli military, is believed to be the last known American hostage held by Hamas in Gaza.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said in March that securing Alexander’s release remained a "top priority" for Washington.

According to Hamas, contact was lost with the group of fighters guarding Alexander after the Israeli army struck the location where he was being held.

Israel has previously accused Hamas of killing hostages in its custody. The Israeli military has not yet commented on Hamas’ latest statement.

Alexander’s case was central to recent negotiations between Hamas officials and U.S. hostage negotiator Adam Boehler.
