Armenia begins nationwide parliamentary election

Armenia is holding a key parliamentary vote on Sunday that will determine the future of the nation’s policies within and beyond the South Caucasus region. Voting started at 8:00am local time (0400GMT) and will end at 8:00pm at more than 2,000 polling stations across the country. 16 political parties and two political alliances have registered to take part in the election. The parliamentary vote is the country's first regular election since snap elections in 2018 and 2021.

Iran war enters 100th day as U.S. considers assets for reconstruction effort

The U.S. government will attempt to redirect Iranian assets to Gulf states for reconstruction and repair costs linked to damage attributed to Iran, according to a source familiar with the matter. The move comes as Tehran carried out additional drone launches following a wave of strikes against Kuwait and Bahrain. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has directed a team to assess costs for damages already inflicted on Gulf allies by Iran, the source said, adding that the U.S. will consider using Iranian assets for repairs of any future destruction as well.

Ukraine reports strikes on Russian oil and military sites 

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said Russian forces struck two civilian search and rescue vessels operating in Ukrainian waters on Saturday, injuring several people. Ukraine reported drone strikes on an oil depot in Ust-Labinsk and a military site near St. Petersburg, which triggered a fire but caused no casualties. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes were a response to Russian attacks and targeted key infrastructure and naval assets, with some drones reportedly traveling around 1,000 kilometres.

North Korea says nuclear status irreversible ahead of Xi visit

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said North Korea will never back down on its status as a nuclear-armed state, warning that it will not tolerate any threats, state media agency KCNA said. Chinese ​President Xi Jinping is set to visit North Korea on Monday for a summit, marking his first visit to the North in nearly seven years as ‌Beijing looks to reinforce ties with Pyongyang.

Gaza humanitarian crisis worsens amid displacement and shortages

Gaza is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of food, water, shelter and medical care. Hospitals and essential infrastructure remain under extreme strain as conditions deteriorate. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), citing Gaza health authorities through the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 72,600 Palestinians had been killed and more than 172,000 injured between 7 October 2023 and 6 May 2026.
