One person has been killed and at least five others injured, some seriously, after shots were fired at a rave in Aarau, northern Switzerland, police said on Sunday.

The shooting reportedly took place at around 2.30am (local time) at a horse-racing track in the Schachen area, where a large rave was under way. Swiss media reported that thousands of people were attending the event when multiple shots were fired.

A major police operation is under way, with the area sealed off and authorities searching for those responsible. A military Super Puma helicopter has also been deployed, while police have urged witnesses to provide photographs or video that could help the investigation.

The circumstances of the shooting and any possible motive remain unclear.

Switzerland has one of Europe's highest rates of gun ownership, although serious gun violence is relatively uncommon.

This is a developing story.
