Finnish President Alexander Stubb said he does not believe Russia would risk attacking a NATO country, arguing there is no evidence Moscow is preparing for a direct confrontation with the alliance.
“It makes no sense for any power in the world to test the resolve of this alliance,” Stubb told Germany’s Bild, citing NATO’s conventional, missile and nuclear capabilities.
Stubb said Russia was suffering unsustainable losses in Ukraine and questioned whether Moscow could mobilise enough forces to fight on two fronts. He nevertheless stressed that NATO must remain prepared and called continued European support for Ukraine vital.
Residents west of Kyiv have described a “wall of fire” sweeping towards their homes after a Russian drone strike hit an ammunition depot in Myla, triggering a series of massive explosions.
People in the surrounding area were forced to flee as shells, mines and drones stored at the facility detonated, with the blasts damaging scores of nearby buildings.
At least 37 people were killed, including Dmytrivka village head Taras Didych, who died while helping with rescue efforts, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukraine's ambassador to Ankara was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Saturday after two Turkish-operated vessels were targeted in the Black Sea, Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said.
The Turkish-operated vessel Lider Bordo Mavi was struck off the Russian port city of Tuapse in the Black Sea on 26 August.
The following day, Lider Kocatepe, which had been sent to tow the damaged vessel, was also targeted, according to the sources.
During the meeting, Türkiye conveyed its reaction to the attacks and stressed the need to ensure the safety of people, property, navigation and the environment in the Black Sea.
Turkish officials also issued the necessary warnings, the sources said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had honoured the memory of its fallen warriors, praising those who died defending the country and its right to freedom.
“We cherish the memory of every name, every story, every hero who has now become part of the great history of our state,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.
He expressed gratitude to those who lost their lives defending Ukraine, adding: “Eternal memory to the fallen warriors. Eternal gratitude.”

The European Union is making statements suggesting that it regards Russia as an "adversary and even an enemy," Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said, adding that Moscow sees no prospect of improved relations between Russia and the EU.
It was not immediately clear which statements Peskov was referring to. He added that the EU's current politicians are confrontational towards Russia, "not only in words but also in deeds".
"They are mobilising Europe's military capabilities and directing them against our country, whilst taking a direct part in hostilities against us," Peskov said.
Ukraine damaged a Russian drone command unit in overnight strikes, Ukraine's General Staff said on Telegram. Kyiv's military struck targets in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, as well as on the Crimean peninsula, the General Staff said.

Seven people, including two children, were injured in Ukrainian strikes on Rostov, southern Russia, overnight, the region's Governor Yury Slyusar said.
Two apartment blocks in the city of Rostov-on-Don were damaged, as a result of falling drone wreckage, Slyusar added.
"UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] wreckage was found in a warehouse," he said in a statement on Telegram, but didn't say who the facility belonged to.
A warehouse used by Russian retailer Ozon was attacked by a drone overnight, causing a fire, the company said on Telegram.
All employees were evacuated ahead of the strike at the warehouse in Rostov, southern Russia and the fire was immediately extinguished, Ozon said.
"We have temporarily suspended operations at the facility so emergency services can inspect the area and ensure it is completely safe," the firm said.
