Police in Minneapolis have said that 2 children were killed in the shooting at Annunciation church today with 17 people injured, 14 of them children.
In a press briefing held a while ago, local police gave further details about the shooting even as they urged people to stay away from the location as it is still an active crime scene.
So far the shooter has not been identified and it is unclear if he had any connected to the Annunciation Church which was connected to the school.
The shooter at a glance:
- Shooter was not inside the building but parked in the parking lot and opened fire through the church windows
- Had three weapons, rifle shotgun and pistol.
- He shot all three weapons.
- Had on black clothing, cargo pants.
- Was in early twenties.
- Investigators believe shooter died from self inflicted gun shot wounds.
- Authorities unable to identify whether shooter had an extensive criminal history.
Police earlier responded to an active shooter at the Annunciation church on Wednesday and have since contained the shooter.
According to infomation released by the Police the victims had been attending a welcome mass at the church which is attached to the school to mark the beginning of the school year.
A spokesperson for the level one trauma center where gunshot victims were taken to confirmed that 11 patients were brought to the hospital with 9 of them being young children.
Four of them required surgery and none of them were deceased as at the time of filing this report.
Mayor Jacob Frey paid an emotional tribute to the children whose lives were lost in the incident.
“You cannot put into the words the gravity tragedy or absolute pain of this situation” he said.
He also called on people to think of the kids involved as though "they’re your own" and asked people to wrap their arms around the families.
The City of Minneapolis in a post on X said there was currently no active threat to the community but urged people to stay away from the area in order to allow victims access emergency services.
“There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims” the post said.
Governor Tim Walz confirmed the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School on the south side of Minneapolis.
He said “I’ve been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and will continue to provide updates as we get more information,” he said adding that he was praying for children and teachers whose first week at school has been marred by this "horrific" event.
Local media is reporting a 'significant' amount of victims with true figures no yet known. Children are said to be part of the victims.
The Governor also confirmed that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and State Patrol are also on the scene.
Images seen by Anewz show heavy police presence at the scene and the area around the school cordoned off.

President Donald Trump posted a few minutes ago on Truthsocial account saying that he has been fully briefed about the shooting in Minneapolis.
He praised the FBI for their response to the scene and called for prayers for victims of the incident.
