The Maldives has officially announced a ban on vaping products, following a directive from President Mohamed Muizzu, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
President Muizzu instructed relevant authorities to take immediate action, starting with the prohibition of importing vaporizer devices, accessories, and parts beginning November 15, 2024. The ban will expand further from December 15, 2024, to cover the possession, use, manufacturing, sale, promotion, and distribution of these devices across the country.
Attorney General Ahmed Usham confirmed that the government will propose amendments to the Tobacco Control Act and Export Import Act in parliament this week to ensure the ban’s legal enforcement.
The decision follows concerns raised by parents and healthcare providers, who called for the ban due to the growing use of electronic smoking devices in the Maldives.
