Iran has buried servicemen and civilians, including people attending a wedding, killed in recent U.S. air raids on southern and western parts of the country. Tehran has called on the UN Security Council to condemn the attacks as a “war crime” under international law.
Bereaved families braved hot and humid conditions on Thursday to bury relatives killed in this week’s U.S. attacks on Iranian ports and cities, including 19 servicemen and civilians.
On Friday, relatives of those killed in the recent strikes gathered at cemeteries to pay their respects, in keeping with Islamic traditions of visiting the graves of the deceased on Fridays.
Among those mourning were relatives of people killed while attending a wedding in the port city of Sirik, in Hormozgan Province near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian civilian and military officials have strongly condemned the U.S. attacks as a “brutal act” and “war crime”, saying civilians were also targeted and vowing retaliation in accordance with international law.
Iranian forces, including the Revolutionary Guards and the Army, responded to Washington’s air raids by targeting multiple U.S. bases in the region with drones and ballistic missiles, including facilities in Jordan, Kuwait, the UAE and Erbil in northern Iraq.
Following graphic media reports showing the remains of a house destroyed in an explosion, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement saying it does not target civilian areas.
Further images and footage showed that the bombed house in Sirik was within 100 metres of a telecommunications tower. U.S. Vice President JD Vance promised an investigation into the incident.
Tehran, however, insists the attack was not a mistake, citing similar deadly strikes on an elementary school and a school gym on the first day of the Israeli-U.S. war against Iran on 28 February. Those attacks killed about 200 students and teachers in Iran’s southern port cities.
In New York, Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s chargé d’affaires to the United Nations, strongly condemned the U.S. attacks in a letter to the UN secretary-general and Security Council, describing them as an example of a war crime.
He urged the world body to condemn Washington for its “gross violation of international humanitarian law”, and saidTehran will respond “decisively and proportionately” to any act of military aggression, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
