A high-speed tram derailment in central Gothenburg, Sweden, has left at least eight people injured late on Thursday (19 June), after the vehicle slammed into a snack bar on Avenyn Avenue.
It was travelling at high speed when it derailed, crashing into a building and injuring at least eight people, including the driver, according to local media and police reports.
The incident occurred on Avenyn, the city’s central boulevard, when the driver failed to control a sharp turn. The tram reportedly veered onto the opposite sidewalk and smashed into the facade of a snack bar, where customers were inside at the time of the crash.
Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, but eyewitnesses said passersby were the first to respond, helping to open the tram doors and assist the injured before ambulances arrived.
Police have confirmed that none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The area was immediately cordoned off, and recovery efforts to remove the tram began overnight.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation under charges of "gross negligence in traffic" and "causing serious harm to health."
The cause of the accident is being examined in coordination with Gothenburg’s tram operator, Göteborgs Spårvägar.
