Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has declined an invitation to attend the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, scheduled for June 15-17, with no official reason provided for his decision.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) will not attend the upcoming Group of Seven summit in Canada, scheduled for June 15-17 in Kananaskis, according to a senior diplomat briefed on the matter. MBS, who did not provide a reason for declining the invitation, has rarely traveled internationally in recent years and previously turned down an invitation to last year's G7 summit in Italy. He also postponed a planned visit to Japan last year due to concerns over his father's health.
Although Saudi Arabia is not a G7 member, it can be invited as a guest. The decision for MBS to skip the summit may help ease tensions within Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal party, where some members of parliament had expressed discontent with the invitation, given the crown prince's controversial human rights record, which Saudi Arabia denies.
Leaders from Ukraine, Mexico, India, Australia, South Africa, South Korea, and Brazil are expected to attend parts of the summit, alongside U.S. President Donald Trump.
