"I will be president for only a couple of weeks, and then I will resign," Vucic told supporters at a pro-government rally in the capital, Belgrade.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday that he will resign within weeks, nearly a year before the end of his second and final term, and announced early presidential and parliamentary elections.

Vucic did not specify the date of his resignation or when the elections would be held.

His current mandate was due to expire in mid-2027. Under Serbia's constitution, presidents are limited to two consecutive terms.

The announcement comes amid months of political tensions and anti-government protests, with opposition groups and demonstrators demanding early elections and accusing the government of democratic backsliding. Vucic and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party have repeatedly rejected those accusations.
