European Council President António Costa and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas visited Kyiv on Sunday, marking their first day in office with a strong show of support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Their visit highlights the EU’s continued backing of Ukraine, though future aid depends on member states' approval. Costa emphasised the EU's solidarity with Ukraine since the war began, reiterating their commitment to supporting its people. Kallas, known for her firm stance against Russia as Estonia's former prime minister, vowed the EU's determination to help Ukraine secure victory.
The visit comes as Ukraine faces intensified Russian attacks and uncertainty over U.S. policy under incoming President Donald Trump, who has criticised aid levels and called for an undefined swift end to the war.
On the battlefield, Russia advances in Donbas while targeting Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter. Costa reaffirmed that peace must not reward aggression, urging unwavering support for Ukraine.
