U.S. officials highlighted new barriers and military support at U.S.-Mexico border near San Ysidro, citing a drop in illegal crossings.
The U.S. Border Patrol held a press conference along the U.S.-Mexico border in front of a newly reinforced section of the border wall near San Ysidro, California.
The event, organized by the Trump administration, aimed to highlight the growing collaboration between the Border Patrol and the Department of Defense.
Officials stated that the addition of concertina wire to the wall has significantly reduced illegal crossings. A U.S. Marines official said they had installed “miles” of the wire to deter migrants from crossing outside designated ports of entry.
The U.S. Army has also deployed personnel along the border to monitor areas previously used for unauthorized entry and assist in operating surveillance equipment.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there are currently 1,900 agents in the San Diego region, supported by 750 Department of Defense personnel as part of the latest efforts.
