Wildfires have broken out in Türkiye’s Antalya province, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate as strong winds fuelled the flames.
The fire started on Monday evening in Antalya’s Aksu district and spread towards residential areas. Authorities evacuated residents from at least 254 homes in Aksu and neighbouring Kepez, while a highway between Antalya and Isparta, was temporarily closed.
More than 2,000 homes in the region were affected by power outages, Anadolu Agency reported.
Two people were hospitalised with leg injuries, while six others suffering from smoke inhalation were treated at the scene, according to the report.
As flames and heavy smoke threatened the area, more than 100 dogs were evacuated from an animal shelter in Aksu and taken to safety, Antalya Municipality said.
At least five firefighting aircraft, 10 helicopters, 110 fire engines and around 600 personnel were deployed to battle the blaze, Anadolu reported.
Firefighters were also tackling wildfires in the nearby provinces of Adana and Mersin.The Adana Governor’s Office said fires in the Çorlu neighbourhood of Karaisalı district, Mansurlu neighbourhood of Feke district and Dağılcak area of Düzağaç neighbourhood in Kozan had been brought under control.
Extinguishing and cooling operations continued, with around 132 hectares of forest estimated to have been damaged in the fires.
Authorities have launched investigations into the causes of the fires, which remain ongoing.
