Eclipse fever is building in Madrid as residents and visitors rush to secure protective glasses ahead of a rare total solar eclipse near sunset on Wednesday (12 August).
At Madrid's Planetarium on Sunday, people queued to buy eclipse glasses, with signs warning that free pairs had already sold out.
Local resident Sofia Garcia de Vinuesa said she and her companion had gone to the Planetarium after struggling to find eclipse glasses in supermarkets.
Australian visitor David Price also bought a spare pair, saying free glasses had become difficult to find across the city.
Price, who has watched three previous eclipses, said he was particularly looking forward to Wednesday's event because of its timing.
"It's extremely beautiful," he said, adding that he hoped to watch the eclipse from a hillside in the countryside.
For Shanghai native Xiaoxi Wu, Wednesday's eclipse will be her first. She said watching a solar eclipse had been a long-held dream and that its timing near sunset would make the experience even more memorable.
The 12 August eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula since 1912, with the path of totality crossing parts of Spain.
Totality will last less than two minutes across much of Spain, with the eclipse occurring as the sun approaches the horizon.
A clear view of the western horizon will therefore be crucial for those hoping to see the full spectacle.
