Spain checked around 200 travellers arriving from Italy on the first day of reintroduced border controls, following a dispute between the two countries over irregular migration.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said 199 people travelling on 12 flights from Italy were checked at the country’s six largest airports, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Alicante and Valencia.
Spain said the temporary border checks on flights and ships arriving from Italy would remain in place until 7 September.
The move followed Italy’s decision to introduce its own controls, which Rome said were prompted by the arrival of 72,000 people in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta on 30 July.
Italy has suspended Schengen border-free arrangements with Spain since 1 August and said its controls would remain in place until at least 15 August.
Rome said its measures would not affect Spanish citizens or other European Union nationals travelling to Italy.
Instead, the controls would focus on non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air or sea.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the government hoped the restrictions could be removed soon.
“We hope to be able to lift the suspension soon, as soon as there is no longer any risk,” Tajani told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published on Sunday.
The Schengen Area allows passport-free travel across 29 European countries.
Member states can, however, temporarily reintroduce border controls when they consider them necessary on security or public-order grounds.
