Eleven people were killed when a plane crashed near Nancy in eastern France on Sunday (28 June), French broadcaster BFM TV reported, citing the local prefect.

Emergency crews were deployed this Sunday after a light aircraft crashed in the northeastern French town of Tomblaine, local authorities said.

French newspaper L'Est Républicain reported that the aircraft was carrying passengers taking part in a baptism flight - an introductory recreational flying experience - when it went down.

According to BFM TV, authorities said all 11 people on board were killed, including the pilot and two groups of five parachutists. The aircraft had taken off from Nancy-Essey airfield before the crash.

Officials have not released details on the cause of the crash. Rescue operations and an investigation are underway.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez is expected to travel to the crash site in the coming hours, his office told BFM TV.

This is a developing story.
