At least three paramilitary troops and three suspected militants were killed after heavily armed attackers stormed a Rangers security compound in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Saturday, authorities said.

The assault began when a suspected suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the entrance of the compound in Karachi's eastern district, triggering a powerful explosion. Moments later, a group of five to six armed militants launched an assault on the facility, prompting an intense exchange of fire with security forces.

Sindh Police Chief Javed Alam Odho said three Rangers personnel were killed in the attack. He added that security forces had killed at least three of the attackers.

A police source told Anadolu that four militants had been killed, while security forces were continuing operations to neutralise any remaining attackers.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The assault is one of the deadliest attacks targeting security forces in Karachi in recent months and comes as Pakistan continues to battle militant violence in several parts of the country.
