Seven people have died and 23 missing after a privately owned ferry carrying 267 people capsized off the coast of North Cyprus, Turkish Cypriot officials said.
Turkish Cypriot Transport Minister Erhan Arikli said the vessel was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members when it overturned on Sunday.
The ferry departed from the port of Kyrenia at 12:30 local time and began taking on water shortly afterwards for an unknown reason, Türkiye’s state-run Anadolu news agency reported.
The vessel was travelling toward the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province when the incident occurred.
Rescuers began bringing passengers to shore after authorities launched an emergency response involving coastguard and private vessels.
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul said 159 passengers had been reached, while those rescued were taken to Kyrenia port for medical checks and possible hospital treatment.
Video footage showed passengers wearing red life jackets gathered on top of the overturned vessel as rescue teams worked to reach them.
The ferry reportedly began taking on water about four miles off the coast of Kyrenia. The cause of the incident remains unclear.
