Eleven people were killed when a small plane carrying skydivers crashed near Nancy in eastern France on Sunday, local officials said.
Emergency crews were deployed after the aircraft went down in the northeastern town of Tomblaine, close to Nancy. Authorities said all those on board were killed.
The victims included the pilot and 10 passengers, five students and five instructors, from a parachuting school. The aircraft had taken off from Nancy-Essey airfield before the crash.
Regional prefect Yves Séguy said the plane appeared to have suffered damage before plunging vertically to the ground. The crash happened in a built-up area near a shopping centre, but officials said there were no casualties on the ground.
The cause of the crash has not been confirmed. Rescue operations are continuing and an investigation has been launched.
An eyewitness who preferred to remain anonymous told Reuters that the airplane rose to the sky around 0900 GMT when the engine suddenly stopped. He also said he did not see any fire, explosion or any sign of a problem before the crash.
A witness who declined to be identified told Reuters the plane was climbing at around 11:00 a.m. local time (0900 GMT) when the engine noise suddenly stopped, as if it had cut out. He said he saw no fire, explosion or other visible sign of a problem before the crash.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez was expected to travel to the crash site.
