Pope Leo joined hundreds of faith leaders at Rome’s Colosseum on Tuesday (October 28) for a multi-faith prayer for peace, urging the world to reject the “abuse of power” and bring an end to wars that continue to claim countless lives.

The ceremony, organised by the Italian Catholic group Community of Sant’Egidio, brought together representatives from major religions, international advocacy groups, and members of the diplomatic community. The event, held outside the ancient amphitheatre, aimed to send a unified message of peace and solidarity amid ongoing global conflicts.

“The world is thirsting for peace,” Pope Leo declared to the gathered crowd. “We need a true and solid era of reconciliation that puts an end to the abuse of power, displays of force and indifference to the rule of law. Enough of war, with all the pain it causes through death.”

As the crowd applauded, the pontiff went on to warn against the normalisation of violence and the persistence of power politics. “We must ensure that this period of history, marked by war and the arrogance of power, soon comes to an end, giving rise to a new era,” he said. “We cannot allow this period to continue. It shapes the minds of people who grow accustomed to war as a normal part of human history. Enough! This is the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth. Enough!”

The gathering concluded with Pope Leo and other religious leaders lighting candles in front of the Colosseum — a powerful gesture symbolising hope and the shared human longing for peace.

Drone footage captured the illuminated square filled with people standing in silence as the candles flickered, representing a collective call to end conflict and foster unity among nations and faiths.
