The Paris prosecutor said on Tuesday it has opened a preliminary investigation into Australian-owned firm Kick following the online death of a French streamer on the livestreaming platform last week.

It will look into whether Kick knowingly provided illegal services, in particular by broadcasting videos of deliberate attacks on personal integrity and whether Kick complied with European regulation on digital services (DSA), in particular the obligation to notify the authorities of risks of attacks on the life or safety of individuals.

French authorities are investigating the death of a man during a live video stream on the Kick platform, where he had regularly been shown enduring violence and humiliation.

On August 20, Raphaël Graven, also known as Jean Pormanove, was found dead at a residence in Contes, a village north of Nice, prosecutors said.

The 46-year-old had been subject to bouts of violence and sleep deprivation during streams, and died in his sleep during a live broadcast, local media reported.

Confirming a judicial investigation was under way, French government minister Clara Chappaz described Mr Graven's death and violence he endured as an "absolute horror", adding he had been "humiliated" for months.
