Egypt has urged the Netherlands to bolster security at its embassy in The Hague after protesters locked its gates in a show of anger over the Gaza war.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed “deep dismay” over the incident during a phone call with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
The protesters, reportedly Egyptian nationals, locked the embassy gates last month in a demonstration criticising Cairo’s role in the Gaza Strip’s worsening humanitarian situation.
The Egyptian statement warned the Netherlands to prevent any recurrence, suggesting that further violations could lead to reciprocal measures.
Veldkamp described the protest as an “isolated incident” and pledged to increase security around the diplomatic mission in accordance with international obligations. He also reiterated the strength of bilateral relations, highlighting economic and investment cooperation.
The Dutch government has not issued an official statement on the protest or Egypt’s concerns.
The demonstration was part of a broader campaign accusing Egypt of complicity in Gaza’s humanitarian crisis by restricting access through the Rafah border crossing. Egyptian authorities reject the claim, insisting the crossing remains open on their side.
