On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to significantly raise tariffs on India over its continued purchase and resale of Russian oil, accusing New Delhi of profiting from the war in Ukraine.

"India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

"Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA."

Although he did not specify the new tariff rate, Trump previously declared he would impose a 25% tariff on Indian imports and hinted at additional penalties.

His comments come amid mounting pressure on India, which has maintained strong energy ties with Russia since the start of the Ukraine war.

Despite Trump's threats, two Indian government officials told that India intends to continue purchasing Russian oil.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity due to the issue’s sensitivity.
