A weekend of FIFA World Cup matches was headlined by Spain as they produced a clinical display against Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Belgium were held to a tense draw by Iran in a day of contrasting Group-stage results.

Spain overpower Saudi Arabia

Spain produced a dominant 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, recovering strongly after a shock opening draw in their previous match.

Mikel Oyarzabal struck twice in a fast start, including an assist for teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who returned to the starting XI and immediately made an impact.

Spain led 3-0 before the first hydration break, with Oyarzabal capitalising on sustained pressure before Saudi Arabia conceded an own goal from Hassan Altambakti after a scramble in the box.

Luis de la Fuente’s side eased off in the second half but remained in control, with a point in their final group game enough to secure progression.

Belgium and Iran share goalless draw

Belgium were held to a 0-0 draw by Iran in Los Angeles after a disciplined defensive display and a series of key saves from both goalkeepers.

Thibaut Courtois and Alireza Beiranvand both produced standout stops in a match where Belgium dominated possession but struggled to convert chances.

Iran briefly thought they had taken the lead through Mehdi Taremi following a clever free-kick routine, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Belgium were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Nathan Ngoy was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, but Iran were unable to capitalise.

Both sides now sit on two points after their opening two matches in Group F.
