Scientists in Norway have uncovered remains of more than 40 species from around 75,000 years ago, shedding new light on Ice Age life in Scandinavia.

The discovery was made in the Arne Qvam cave near Narvik, and includes species such as the Arctic fox, cod, walrus, bowhead whale, puffin, ptarmigan, and the now-extinct Arctic lemming.

The research, which began in 2021, involved DNA analysis and bone studies. The finding of the Arctic lemming, now extinct in Scandinavia, marked the first such discovery in Norway.

Experts describe the discovery as a rare glimpse into ancient Arctic ecosystems.
