Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan held talks on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York. They discussed progress towards peace and the development of economic and transport links between the two countries.
According to statements from both foreign ministries, the ministers reviewed progress made since the August 2025 Washington summit, where Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a joint declaration and initialled a peace agreement.
Particular attention was paid to unblocking the economic and transport infrastructure between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The ministers highlighted trade and transit between the two countries as “practical examples of the benefits of peace”.
They also discussed opportunities to promote a positive agenda through various multilateral platforms.
Speaking to AnewZ, political analyst Ulviyya Zulfikar said the significance of the New York meeting was that Azerbaijan and Armenia were increasingly discussing peace in practical economic terms.
“Foreign Ministers Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan specifically focused on unblocking economic and transport infrastructure and described trade and transit interaction as practical examples of the benefits of peace,” Zulfikar said.
She said the process could make normalisation more sustainable as economic interests begin to support it.
Direct dialogue to continue
Bayramov and Mirzoyan agreed to continue their direct dialogue, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry issued an identical statement following the meeting, also highlighting the importance of peace and progress in economic and transport connectivity between the two countries.
