Russia strikes on Kyiv kills at least 10 as Zelenskyy cuts short Ireland visit

At least 10 people were killed and 56 others injured after Russia launched a large overnight drone and missile attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said. Residential buildings were hit across the capital, while a hotel on the city's central Shevchenko Boulevard caught fire.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said around three dozen locations were damaged in the attack. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the first six floors of an apartment block collapsed after a direct strike.

Emergency crews spent the morning searching through the rubble, with some residents believed to be trapped inside damaged buildings.

The attack also injured paramedics and ambulance drivers. Images from Kyiv showed burnt-out cars, shattered windows and thick smoke rising from damaged buildings.

Air raid alerts were issued across much of Ukraine, forcing families to shelter underground with children, pets and essential belongings.

Zelenskyy cuts short Ireland visit

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned that Russia could launch a major overnight attack and cut short his visit to Dublin, where he had been attending events marking Ireland's presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, described it as "another horrific night" for Kyiv's residents. Poland briefly scrambled fighter jets as a precaution before confirming there had been no violation of its airspace.

Fighting continues on both sides

The latest strike came as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continued on several fronts. Zelenskyy has called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the more than four-year war, but the Kremlin has rejected the proposal.

Ukraine has also stepped up long-range drone strikes inside Russia in recent weeks. Russian officials said air defences shot down several drones over the Leningrad region, while a man was killed and his wife injured in the Belgorod region after a drone struck their home.

Casualty figures have not been verified independently as Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.
