Macron and Aliyev discuss bilateral ties and South Caucasus peace efforts

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (21 May), with both leaders discussing bilateral ties, regional developments and ongoing peace efforts in the South Caucasus.

The call was confirmed by the official X account of the Azerbaijani president, which said the two leaders “reviewed issues on the agenda of Azerbaijan-France bilateral relations and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.”

The statement added: “We also discussed regional and global developments.”

France reiterates support for peace process

Macron later commented publicly on the conversation, saying he had reiterated France’s support for the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Writing on X, the French president said the pair had discussed regional issues and the possibility of expanding bilateral relations, while stressing the importance of maintaining momentum in negotiations between Baku and Yerevan.

France maintains regional engagement

France has remained closely engaged in developments in the South Caucasus, with Macron repeatedly calling for stability and dialogue in the region.

Paris has also sought to maintain diplomatic relations with both Baku and Yerevan despite periodic strains in relations.
