A Kyiv-Warsaw train was struck near the Polish border, Ukraine's state railway firm said on Sunday. No passengers were injured. Ukrainian Railways said that the country's railways were facing systematic attacks for a second day and warned of widespread delays.
Lithuania briefly closed Vilnius airport and NATO summoned at least one fighter jet in response to a possible sighting of a drone in Lithuanian airspace, the country's National Crisis Management Centre said.
A jet was summoned from Siauliai in northern Lithuania, the Centre said, where the Italian air force is currently based as part of the NATO Baltic Air Defence mission.
Countries along NATO's eastern edge have reported a series of drones straying into their airspace linked to the conflict stemming from Russia's 2022 full scale invasion of Ukraine.
A coordinated attack is underway on Ukraine's railway network, the country's state railway firm Ukrainian Railways has said in a post on Telegram.
A passenger train was struck in Yahodyn, two kilometres from the Polish border, earlier in the day, the firm said—noting that it was the second consecutive day that Russia had targeted Ukraine's railway network.
The firm said that trains were running to the Polish capital Warsaw and in the opposite direction, but that delays remained “significant.”
Ukraine is preparing for the resumption of three-sided talks aimed at resolving the war with Russia in October, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Chief of Staff, Kyrylo Budanov, was quoted as saying by Ukrainian media late on Saturday.
He told reporters on the sidelines of a conference in Kyiv that Ukraine was readying itself for the prospect of new talks involving Russia and the United States, according to Ukrainian media.
“We are getting ready. In October,” Budanov said.
Budanov was speaking several days after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks in both Moscow and Kyiv. It was their first such visit to Moscow since February and their first visit to the Ukrainian capital.
The last trilateral meeting took place in Geneva in February. U.S.-led diplomatic efforts had stalled as Washington was focused on the conflict with Iran.
Ukrainian forces hit two Russian oil refineries in overnight strikes, Ukraine's General Staff has said.
It said attacks on the Slavyansky Oil Refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, southern Russia, and the Taneco Oil Refinery in Nizhnekamsk, western Russia, sparked fires.
According to Ukraine's General Staff, the Slavyansky Oil Refinery, operated by Russian firm Slavyansk ECO, is one of the largest independent oil refineries in southern Russia and produces petrol, naphtha, fuel oil and aviation kerosene.
A Russian drone strike hit the border area between Ukraine and Poland, Kyiv's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said.
“Russia’s barbaric strikes at the Ukraine-Poland border in Yahodyn are not just a continuation of its attacks on our state borders,” he said.
“This is Putin's terror 'knocking' directly on the doors of the EU and NATO. Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners,” he added.
Sybiha initially said that Russia had hit a border crossing point between Ukraine and Poland, but edited his post.
Ukraine's military said on Sunday it had hit an oil refinery in Russia's southern Krasnodar region overnight.
“The operation struck a key oil-processing unit and the company's tank farm, which supports Russia's war against Ukraine,” it said on Telegram.
The head of Russia's state nuclear energy firm has accused Ukraine of attacking diesel fuel trucks, killing two Russian servicemen and deliberately jeopardising safety at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine.
Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, said the attack took place on Friday and also resulted in injuries to other Russian soldiers.
The Zaporizhzhia Plant, Europe's largest with six reactors, was seized by Russian forces in the early weeks of the Ukraine war that broke out in February 2022. Each side has regularly accused the other of actions that endanger safety at the plant and increase the risk of a nuclear accident.
Likhachev issued a statement saying Ukrainian forces had on Friday launched “a series of combined strikes” on fuel trucks which deliver diesel to the station.
“The strikes hit very close to the perimeter of the station's site,” he added.
“Two servicemen were killed, and a large number of Russian soldiers were injured, some seriously. They were all involved in supporting this purely civilian mission.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi both offered their services for Ukraine peace talks, and Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed their readiness, Russian state news agency TASS has reported, citing Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The three leaders are among those attending the BRICS summit in Delhi.
Russian newspaper Izvestia earlier reported that the United Arab Emirates had also offered to provide a platform for talks.
Search and rescue operations at a 25-storey apartment block hit during overnight strikes on Odesa, southern Russia, have now finished, Ukraine's State Emergency Service has said in a post on Telegram.
Two people were killed and 25 people injured in the attack, the agency added.
The United Arab Emirates is ready to provide a platform for negotiations on Ukraine, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, told Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian newspaper Izvestia reported, citing senior Russian diplomat Yuri Ushakov.
“The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi confirmed that the Emirati side is ready to provide its site, as it did before,” he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
A high-rise building, warehouses, industrial plants and other infrastructure were damaged during overnight strikes on Ukraine's southern Odesa region, the country's State Emergency Service has said on Telegram.
More than 100 firefighters were deployed to deal with the aftermath, the agency added.
An overnight drone attack on a industrial plant in Nizhnekamsk, western Russia, killed two people and sparked a fire, Ukrainian newspaper The Kyiv Independent reported, citing Russian authorities. Nizhnekamsk is a major oil refining and petrochemical hub in Russia's Republic of Tatarstan.
Russian air strikes across several Ukrainian regions have killed at least 10 people and injured dozens, local officials said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched nearly 500 drones since early Saturday, with attacks hitting residential areas, businesses and infrastructure.
Russia said its forces struck Ukrainian industrial and port facilities, including sites in Zaporizhzhia and Odesa.
Ukraine reported strikes on Russian industrial infrastructure in the Samara region, while a drone alert temporarily closed Moldova’s airspace for nearly an hour and temporarily closed seven border crossings.
Meanwhile, Russian officials said that three people had been killed in Ukrainian drone attacks on Saturday in Russia-held areas of Ukraine.
