At least 40 people were killed after a passenger bus plunged off a highway into a ravine in southwestern Pakistan, officials said on Friday (3 July).

The bus was travelling from Quetta when it lost control and crashed into a deep rocky ravine in the mountainous Dana Sar area of Balochistan, near the border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials said there were 48 passengers on board at the time of the crash, with at least eight survivors taken to hospital with injuries.

According to local authorities, the bus had been heading towards the capital, Islamabad.

Speed and overcrowding

Authorities said the vehicle was believed to have been overcrowded and travelling at high speed when the driver lost control.

Sanaullah Sherani said emergency teams were dispatched to the scene, while Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind confirmed the death toll.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan, where poor road infrastructure, reckless driving and overloaded vehicles frequently contribute to deadly crashes.

This is a developing story.
