Memorial events were held in Tehran’s main squares on Wednesday (8 April) to mark the 40th day since the killing of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died during U.S.-Israeli attacks on 28 February.
Large crowds gathered at key public spaces, Sanat Square, Enghelab Square, Felestin Square and Vali Asr Square with mourners holding portraits, chanting slogans and taking part in organised ceremonies led by religious and political figures.
The 40‑day commemoration comes amid heightened tensions following the conflict and ongoing diplomatic efforts that have so far successfully secured a two-week ceasefire between Israel, Iran and the U.S.
The ceremonies in Tehran on 9 April, 2026, marked 40 days since the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Israeli and U.S. strikes.
