Climate change and El Niño combined to intensify Hurricane Polo, the longest-lasting Category 5 storm ever recorded in the Pacific, according to a new study. Human-caused global warming increased the hurricane’s wind speed by around 6 mph (10 kph), while El Niño added approximately 5 mph (8 kph). The study found that climate change made the conditions fueling the storm 23 times more likely, compared with 14 times due to El Niño.
Indonesia is facing its most severe wildfire season since 2015, with authorities blaming peatland degradation linked to past food estate projects and an El Niño-driven drought for worsening the fires. Thick haze has driven air pollution to hazardous levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching nearly 1,600 in Central Kalimantan’s Katingan district, while hundreds of thousands of people across seven provinces have suffered respiratory illnesses. The smoke has also spread to neighbouring countries, prompting school closures in East Timor and parts of Malaysia.
A study by the Danish Meteorological Institute has found that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a major ocean current system weakened by global warming, could recover if global temperatures decline. Published in Science Advances, the research found no tipping point leading to an irreversible collapse in the model, although full recovery could take several centuries. A weakened AMOC could disrupt global rainfall patterns and accelerate coastal sea-level rise, while melting of the Greenland ice sheet may be irreversible.
Torrential rain triggered widespread flooding across İstanbul, Türkiye, on Wednesday, killing a 14-year-old boy and prompting rescue operations across several districts. Authorities recorded 1,277 flooding incidents and 15 landslides, with 808 homes, 280 businesses and 76 vehicles affected. Around 8,000 personnel and 2,000 vehicles and construction machines were deployed as emergency crews rescued stranded residents and animals, while rainfall in Beykoz’s Omerli area reached 193.84 kilograms per square metre.
A 62-year-old man died on Wednesday after floodwaters swept his car onto a beach on the Greek island of Rhodes during a heavy rainstorm. His body was found near a seaside village about 30 kilometres from Rhodes town, while four cars were washed away by the severe weather, according to the coast guard. Social media footage showed a vehicle being carried away by muddy floodwaters as streets flooded and rivers overflowed. Authorities urged people on Rhodes and other Aegean islands to limit travel amid continuing severe weather conditions.
