A Baroque masterpiece by Caravaggio, held in a private collection for over 60 years, is being publicly displayed for the first time at a museum in Rome.

Attributed to Caravaggio in 1963, the portrait of Monsignor Maffeo Barberini later Pope Urban VIII, showcases the artist’s best known signature 'chiaroscuro' technique, bringing his subjects to life with dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Urban VIII, a patron of the arts, famously supported figures like Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

“This painting has never been seen in a museum or exhibition until now,” said Thomas Clement Salomon, Director of the National Galleries of Ancient Art.

“Seeing it in person reveals its magnetic quality and extraordinary power,” added curator Paola Nicita. "Don’t miss this historic opportunity to experience the genius of Caravaggio."
