OpenAI has unveiled Deep Research, a new feature for ChatGPT that can scan, analyze, and synthesize information from hundreds of online sources to generate detailed reports in minutes.
Announced just two days after the release of o3-mini, Deep Research allows users to prompt ChatGPT with questions and upload files like PDFs and spreadsheets. The tool takes between 5 to 30 minutes to compile reports, documenting its progress and citing sources in a side panel. OpenAI claims the feature performs in “tens of minutes what would take a human many hours.”
"Our ultimate aspiration is a model that can uncover and discover new knowledge for itself," said Mark Chen, OpenAI's Chief Research Officer, during the livestream announcement. He emphasized the tool's role in the company’s broader artificial general intelligence (AGI) strategy.
Limitations and Pricing:
OpenAI acknowledges that Deep Research may occasionally hallucinate facts or misinterpret data, though reportedly at lower rates than other models. The tool may also struggle to distinguish authoritative information from unreliable sources and could produce formatting errors. OpenAI expects these issues to improve with more usage.
Deep Research bears similarities to Google’s Gemini Advanced suite, which offers comparable capabilities. However, while Google’s tool is available through a $20/month One AI Premium plan, OpenAI’s version is priced at $200/month for ChatGPT Pro users. Due to high computational demands, Pro users are limited to 100 queries per month.
OpenAI plans to develop a more cost-efficient version with higher usage limits and aims to make the tool available to ChatGPT Plus users within a month, following safety tests. However, the feature is not yet accessible in the UK, Switzerland, or the broader European Economic Area.
