Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, warned on Saturday of a possible new Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region. The area in northeastern Ukraine has seen heavy fighting since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Moscow has been gradually advancing along several parts of the frontline this summer, using relentless waves of infantry to wear down Ukrainian defences. Russian forces have also moved into northern Ukraine’s Sumy region in recent months, securing a small foothold there.

"I dedicated two days to working with units in Kharkiv region," Syrskyi wrote on Telegram. He explained that he spent the time speaking with commanders, assessing the local situation, and understanding what troops need most.

Syrskyi noted that Russian forces are relying on large numbers to push forward but stressed that Ukrainian troops must be prepared to use tactical and technological solutions to prevent further Russian advances.

The warning highlights ongoing pressure on Ukraine’s eastern defences as Moscow seeks to exploit its advantage in manpower and supplies during the summer campaign.
