German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, calling for greater international pressure to push Moscow toward peace negotiations.
Speaking after the NATO summit in The Hague, Merz revealed that he held a detailed meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which he expressed appreciation for Ankara’s willingness to host peace talks in Istanbul or Ankara.
Merz urged Erdogan to use his influence with Moscow to help bring Russian leaders back to the negotiating table after over three years of war. He emphasized that a political solution is urgently needed to end the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
The German chancellor also discussed Ukraine with U.S. President Donald Trump during a separate meeting, encouraging Trump to back additional sanctions on Russia. Merz underscored that economic pressure, not military force, is key to forcing progress.
He noted the EU will adopt its 18th sanctions package against Russia but stressed that without American support, pressure on Moscow would remain insufficient. Merz called on the U.S. Senate to approve a new sanctions bill and urged Trump to lend his backing, saying coordinated transatlantic action is vital for advancing peace.
