Afghanistan is seeking direct access to Azerbaijani fuel suppliers, increased exports and greater investment as Kabul and Baku move to strengthen economic and private-sector ties.
The proposals emerged from talks between Sayed Karim Hashemi, head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI), and Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ilham Mammadov, in Kabul on Tuesday.
Afghanistan’s private sector is seeking closer ties with Azerbaijani companies to purchase petrol and diesel.
Hashemi asked the Azerbaijani ambassador to help Afghan traders establish direct links with reliable suppliers in Azerbaijan.
“The ACCI chief also asked the Azerbaijani ambassador to facilitate cooperation with Afghan traders seeking to purchase and import petrol and diesel from Azerbaijan, including by helping connect them with reputable Azerbaijani companies and suppliers,” ACCI said.
Boosting trade and joint investment was another major focus, with Afghanistan seeking to increase exports to the Azerbaijani market.
Hashemi highlighted opportunities in Afghanistan’s agriculture, industry and mining sectors.
“He called for increased trade and greater exports of Afghan products to Azerbaijan,” the chamber said.
Mammadov expressed Azerbaijan’s interest in strengthening economic and trade relations with Afghanistan.
The two sides agreed on the need to establish more direct links between Afghan and Azerbaijani traders and investors.
They said closer private-sector ties could help both countries make greater use of existing trade and investment opportunities.
Afghanistan is also seeking a stronger Azerbaijani business presence at the fifth Imam Abu Hanifa National and International Exhibition in Kabul.
Hashemi invited Azerbaijani traders and investors to attend the exhibition and explore investment opportunities in Afghanistan.
Mammadov welcomed the invitation and expressed hope that Azerbaijan’s private sector would have a greater presence at this year’s exhibition.
