A Danish military helicopter came within “metres” of being struck by flares fired by a Russian warship, Denmark's Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said on Tuesday. Russia accused Denmark of carrying out “dangerous manoeuvres” near its ship, and said it was investigating the incident.
A Russian warship fired two flares towards a Danish military helicopter sent to photograph it in international waters off Denmark on Monday, with one narrowly missing the aircraft, the Danish military has said.
No warning or radio contact was given before the firing of the flares, which came within “a matter of metres” of the Fennec military helicopter, Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus told Reuters.
Russia accused Denmark of carrying out “dangerous manoeuvres” near its ship, and said it was investigating the incident.
But Bruus said the helicopter had been following a typical pattern to photograph the frigate, which he described as an operation that has been carried out many times in the past.
Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, said in a statement that Moscow would thoroughly investigate the incident, adding that it was not the first time Danish military helicopters had carried out dangerous manoeuvres near Russian warships in international waters. Denmark summoned him over the incident.
Western politicians and diplomats should “soberly” assess the risks of travelling to Ukraine, Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.
She was speaking two days after a Russian drone hit a passenger train on a line that had been used minutes earlier by another train carrying a group including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt.

A drone shot down by a NATO fighter jet in Lithuanian airspace on Tuesday “most probably” came from Russia, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said.
The drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Russian ally Belarus after midnight and was shot down near the southern village of Pratkunai not far from the city of Kaunas, the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre said.
“Last night, again, the Italian pilots have intervened and they have shot down a threat that most probably came from Russia”, Crosetto told reporters at Siauliai Air Base, where Italian fighters are based as part of the NATO Baltic Air Defence mission.
“The presence of Italian aircraft here is the clear demonstration of the value of the Atlantic alliance for Italy and what it means to be an ally," he added after meeting crews with Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas.
Russia did not immediately comment on the incident.
Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers carried out patrol flights over neutral waters of the Barents Sea, off the northern coast of Norway and Russia, and the Norwegian Sea, Russian news agencies have said citing the country's Defence Ministry.
Foreign fighter jets escorted the Russian bombers during parts of the flights, Russia's Ministry of Defence said.

Moscow’s forces have continued pressing from the south and deeper into Kostiantynivka despite a slowdown in Russian advances this year. Reuters said it could not independently verify the Ukrainian commander’s claims about the latest territorial gains.
Ukraine struck an oil refinery in the Russian city of Syzran, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday.
Zelenskyy also reported a strike on a drone production facility in the Russian city of Taganrog, and on a drone preparation and launch site in the Oryol region.
