A Danish military helicopter came within “metres” of being struck by flares fired by a Russian warship, Denmark's Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus said on Tuesday. Russia accused Denmark of carrying out “dangerous manoeuvres” near its ship, and said it was investigating the incident.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for a stronger European response to alleged Russian hybrid attacks, accusing Moscow of seeking to intimidate European societies and weaken their support for Ukraine.
“Putin will not stop unless he is stopped,” Kallas told the European Parliament, calling for measures including further sanctions, restrictions on Russian diplomats and tighter controls on visas for Russian citizens.
More than 500 trains have been damaged or destroyed in Russian attacks since the beginning of Russia's war on Ukraine, Kyiv's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said in a post on X.
He added that Ukraine urgently needed replacements and asked for assistance from allies.
NATO intelligence services found no evidence of Russian involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August and instead found indications of a "Ukrainian connection," Russia's Foreign Ministry has claimed, citing a statement by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service.
Germany formally accused Russia of responsibility for the drone incident at the beginning of September and expelled around 150 Russian diplomatic staff from the country, among other measures.

German police are investigating after drone debris was discovered east of Lake Steinhuder in the northwest of the country, German newspaper Bild has reported. The area is located just one kilometre from a German Armed Forces airbase.
Ukrainian soldier have cleared Russian forces from several areas in the north of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine and captured one village, Ukraine's 3rd Army Corps has said in social media posts.
"Enemy losses at this stage include approximately 1,500 soldiers, over 12,000 drones, and hundreds of units of armoured vehicles, artillery systems, and motor vehicles," the unit said.

"The infrastructure used by the Border Guard is being strengthened, among other things," he said, adding that Russia's actions threatened the security of all of Europe.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said she would take a phone call from Russian President Vladimir Putin or Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov if they called her, in an interview with Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
"Of course I will discuss it if the opportunity arises," Kallas said, in response to question on the issue, Kallas reported.
Russian forces have struck a ferry and a tanker in Ukrainian Black Sea ports, Russia's Defence Ministry has said.
The Ministry said the ferry was hit in the port of Chornomorsk and the tanker in the port of Izmail. Both vessels were being used to supply the Ukrainian military, it said.
The Ministry added that Russian forces had struck a cargo train in the port of Pivdennyi and continued attacks on railway infrastructure in western Ukraine that it said was being used to transport military cargo from Europe. It provided no further details.
Two people have been killed in Russian strikes on a residential area of the city of Sloviansk, eastern Ukraine, the city's military administration said in a post on Telegram.
Three homes were also damaged in the attack at 10:30am local time on Tuesday, authorities said.
Ships which transport Russian liquified natural gas (LNG) could come close to being placed under U.S. sanctions this week, NGO Urgewald has told Ukrainian newspaper The Kyiv Independent.
According to the organisation, the U.S. House of Representatives may vote on a bill this week that would sanction 14 specialised tankers that transport LNG from Russia's Yamal Peninsula.
The UN is mulling moving aid supplies in Ukraine underground to avoid Russian strikes.
Speaking in Geneva, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, said 10 aid warehouses had been struck this year, destroying millions of dollars' worth of supplies.
One of the World Health Organization's main warehouses containing medical supplies was hit earlier this month, and other strikes have destroyed hygiene kits and children's school supplies, he said.
“These deliberate attacks on warehousing capacities (...) is a new trend of the last few months,” Schmale, added.
A Russian warship fired two flares towards a Danish military helicopter sent to photograph it in international waters off Denmark on Monday, with one narrowly missing the aircraft, the Danish military has said.
No warning or radio contact was given before the firing of the flares, which came within “a matter of metres” of the Fennec military helicopter, Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus told Reuters.
Russia accused Denmark of carrying out “dangerous manoeuvres” near its ship, and said it was investigating the incident.
But Bruus said the helicopter had been following a typical pattern to photograph the frigate, which he described as an operation that has been carried out many times in the past.
Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, said in a statement that Moscow would thoroughly investigate the incident, adding that it was not the first time Danish military helicopters had carried out dangerous manoeuvres near Russian warships in international waters. Denmark summoned him over the incident.
Western politicians and diplomats should “soberly” assess the risks of travelling to Ukraine, Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.
She was speaking two days after a Russian drone hit a passenger train on a line that had been used minutes earlier by another train carrying a group including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt.

A drone shot down by a NATO fighter jet in Lithuanian airspace on Tuesday “most probably” came from Russia, Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said.
The drone entered Lithuanian airspace from Russian ally Belarus after midnight and was shot down near the southern village of Pratkunai not far from the city of Kaunas, the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre said.
“Last night, again, the Italian pilots have intervened and they have shot down a threat that most probably came from Russia”, Crosetto told reporters at Siauliai Air Base, where Italian fighters are based as part of the NATO Baltic Air Defence mission.
“The presence of Italian aircraft here is the clear demonstration of the value of the Atlantic alliance for Italy and what it means to be an ally," he added after meeting crews with Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas.
Russia did not immediately comment on the incident.
Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers carried out patrol flights over neutral waters of the Barents Sea, off the northern coast of Norway and Russia, and the Norwegian Sea, Russian news agencies have said citing the country's Defence Ministry.
Foreign fighter jets escorted the Russian bombers during parts of the flights, Russia's Ministry of Defence said.

Donetsk remains one of the main battlegrounds of the war, with Russia seeking control of the entire region. Moscow’s forces have continued pressing from the south and deeper into Kostiantynivka despite a slowdown in Russian advances this year. Reuters said it could not independently verify the Ukrainian commander’s claims about the latest territorial gains.
Ukraine struck an oil refinery in the Russian city of Syzran, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday.
