Nigeria and Brazil have signed a $1 billion agreement to strengthen agriculture, energy, food security, and defence in Nigeria, according to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The deal was announced during the visit of Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin to Abuja on Tuesday (24 June).

The agreement will support the deployment of mechanized farming equipment, training, and service centres across Nigeria. This move is seen as a major step toward shifting from subsistence farming to large-scale production, amid growing concerns over food imports and land access.

Shettima said Nigeria is also prioritizing gas production, refining, and renewable energy to attract long-term investments.

The government aims to transform the economy into a $1 trillion market by 2030 through reforms in agriculture, energy, education, and finance.
