The U.S. has sanctioned a top Venezuelan gang leader wanted for drug and terror crimes.

The U.S. Treasury Department has sanctioned Giovanni Vicente Mosquera Serrano, a suspected leader of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Mosquera, already on the FBI’s most-wanted list, faces charges from the Justice Department for drug trafficking and terrorism-related crimes.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) confirmed the sanctions on Tuesday, while the State Department is offering up to $3 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

President Donald Trump has claimed that Tren de Aragua is working with the Venezuelan government to expand its U.S. operations. He cited this alleged link to justify deporting suspected gang members to a high-security prison in El Salvador. However, at least one senior U.S. official has admitted there is no confirmed evidence that President Nicolás Maduro directly controls the group.
