Hungary’s foreign minister on Wednesday criticised European plans to establish military hubs in Ukraine, saying the move risks pushing Europe closer to a direct confrontation with Russia.

“Yesterday in Paris, the Coalition of the Willing made yet another proposal that pushes Europe closer to a direct confrontation with Russia,” Peter Szijjarto said on social media platform X.

He added that Hungary will “stay out of this” and supports peace talks, including high-level negotiations between the U.S. and Russia, firmly rejecting what he called a move towards war.

The warning came after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a declaration of intent in Paris following the “Coalition of the Willing” summit.

The UK and France said they plan to establish military hubs across Ukraine.

Russia has previously stated that any deployment of foreign armed forces in Ukraine would be “absolutely unacceptable” and would be considered preparations for military intervention.
