Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday held his first phone call with newly inaugurated South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, calling for mutual respect and cooperation to keep bilateral relations “on the right track,” according to Chinese state media.
Xi emphasized that both nations should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, and said that healthy, stable, and deepening ties between China and South Korea would benefit not only the two countries, but also regional and global peace and stability, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
He also urged stronger bilateral exchanges and reiterated the importance of working together as “friendly neighbours” to protect global and regional industrial and supply chains.
The conversation marks the first direct engagement between the two leaders since Lee assumed office last week.
