North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un supervised a missile test on Thursday, emphasizing the nation's nuclear combat readiness, according to state media KCNA.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test of short-range ballistic missiles and long-range artillery on Thursday, reiterating the importance of keeping the country’s nuclear forces ready for rapid response, state media reported Friday.

According to the KCNA news agency, the test also evaluated the operational reliability of North Korea’s “nuclear trigger” system in response to what Pyongyang calls a “sensitive regional military climate.”

South Korea and Japan confirmed multiple ballistic missile launches from North Korea’s east coast on Thursday, suggesting performance testing of weapons already deployed.

KCNA reported that 600 mm multiple launch rocket systems and the Hwasong-11 tactical ballistic missile were used in the drills.

The show of force comes amid heightened tensions in the region as the U.S., South Korea, and Japan continue joint military exercises. North Korea has repeatedly condemned these drills, calling them provocative.
