Azerbaijan exported goods worth $17.372 million to Armenia between January and July 2026, according to data from the State Customs Committee, as commercial ties between the two South Caucasus neighbours showed signs of expansion.

The customs figures show trade remained heavily one-sided. Azerbaijan's indirect imports from Armenia totalled just $960 during the seven-month period, while no imports from Armenia were recorded in July.

Fuel shipments open new trade links

The figures come as Baku and Yerevan test limited economic ties alongside broader efforts to normalise relations. Earlier direct shipments focused mainly on fuel, with Azerbaijan sending petrol and diesel by rail to Armenia after decades without such transfers.

AnewZ previously reported that the first Azerbaijani petrol shipment reached Armenia by rail, in a move Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described as a sign that "peace has now become a reality."

Subsequent deliveries included 1,220 tonnes of AI-95 petrol in late December and a further 3,677 tonnes of petrol and diesel in January 2026.

Fuel shipments continued later in the year, including 17 railway wagons carrying 984 tonnes of diesel fuel to Armenia. The deliveries have made energy products the most visible early sign of renewed bilateral trade.

Armenian officials have also signalled interest in reciprocal commerce. Pashinyan said earlier that Armenia would begin exporting goods to Azerbaijan soon, although a specific list of products has yet to be made public.

Azerbaijan posts $9.5 billion trade surplus

Across Azerbaijan's wider economy, foreign trade turnover reached $29.22 billion between January and July, up 1.3 per cent from a year earlier. Exports accounted for $19.34 billion, while imports stood at $9.881 billion.

Exports rose by 27 per cent year-on-year, while imports fell by 27.4 per cent, leaving Azerbaijan with a foreign trade surplus of about $9.5 billion. The surplus was 5.9 times higher than in the same period last year.

Trade with Armenia remains a fraction of Azerbaijan's overall turnover, but the figures carry wider political significance as transport links, customs procedures and reciprocal commerce remain key elements of the post-conflict economic agenda.
